What Causes Suffering? A Vedic Perspective.

March 31, 2026 Rachel Appel

What causes suffering?

From the Vedic perspective, the two main causes of suffering are:

1. Resistance: not accepting the present moment as it is
2. Stories: the dramas we create in our mind about what’s happening

So it’s not our life events themselves, but our response to them, that creates suffering or discomfort.

What does it look like not to suffer?

Accepting things as they are. Having a more neutral attitude. Knowing that something evolutionary is happening, even if we can’t see it yet. Feeling emotions or sensations without resisting them or attaching a story. Letting them move through and pass in their own time.

Of course, this is much easier said than done! But even bringing awareness to this can be incredibly powerful.

Next time we feel discomfort or suffering, can we ask:

1. How am I resisting this moment?
2. What stories am I creating that I can let go of?

In practicing this, I’ve noticed my grip on the moment softens, and there is a greater sense of neutrality and acceptance of what’s happening.

I’ve found that a consistent meditation practice makes this a lot more accessible in real life, not just in theory.

If learning Vedic Meditation has been on your mind, I’m teaching my next course May 14-17. Reach out for more details, I’d love to have you join! ✨🤍✨
